The deal with natural sharpening stones

When you really care about your knives you may want to sharpen in a way that will give incredible edges and prolong the life of your knife.

These finishing stones, made 500 million years ago, contain a perfect mix of silica and other particles to truly sharpen and polish your cutting edge. It is easily possible to get blades shaving sharp directly from the stone.

They are particularly well suited for harder laminated and Japanese knives including single beveled blades, and will polish the hard core steel while giving a beautiful misty ‘kasumi’ to the softer cladding. They can also be used as a pre-finisher for razors and tools. **

Unlike synthetic stones, these natural stones continuously release ever finer new particles during each sharpening session. It is this muddy slurry that does the actual sharpening. The result is a truly polished edge that will be longer lasting than the micro-serrated edges that results from synthetic stones.

But over and above the fantastic and superior results, it is perhaps the idea and the almost meditative process that is most special. These mudstones are part of the Table Mountain group Tygerberg formation. They were created in the inland oceans of Gondwanaland, long before the earth looked like it does today.

In normal use a stone like this my last you decades. We think that is also quite special.

** Please note that thes stones are to be used as the last step in a progression. They are very fine and not meant to bring a new edge to very dull knives. Try to start with a coarse grit synthetic stone and step up to around 1000 to 2000 grit. Then let these stones take you all the way. If you keep your knives reasonably sharp this is all you need to touch up. For razors you will need one additional step before stopping.
